Journey of Hope and Healing:

Walking to Rebuild Abdul Hakeem’s Home

When a mortar bomb hit Abdul Hakeem’s family home in Fallujah two years ago, the house was virtually destroyed and they lost most of their furniture.  His father and brothers were able to get the materials together to rebuild one-fourth of what they had, and that is where Abdul Hakeem’s mother and 8 siblings are living now.  They estimate that the cost of materials to rebuild the rest of their home will be about $10,000, and the labor will be done by the family with Abdul Hakeem’s help.  In the bombing, Abdul Hakeem’s mother was also injured, losing her unborn child.  She received treatment in Iraq, but is still in need of a $2,000 surgery to give support to her damaged abdominal wall.

 

Pittsburgh has shown tremendous support and compassion to Abdul Hakeem and his family, from the doctors and hospitals that have volunteered their services to the families who have warmly welcomed them.  We will continue to support them as they return to Iraq in the coming months.  In the Journey of Healing and Hope, starting and ending at The Islamic Center (4100 Bigelow Blvd), we will walk through Oakland, experiencing on our way the journey that Abdul Hakeem and his father have made.  As we learn about their journey to Pittsburgh, we support them as they look forward to the next journey, the journey back to Fallujah and the home and family that awaits them.  Please join us in this important endeavor by walking with us or by giving as you are able to help this amazing, resilient family rebuild their home and their lives.
